Common Questions
Answers to the most common questions about EV diagnostics, battery health, pre-purchase inspections, and how our mobile service works.
EVS Diagnostics is an independent mobile EV diagnostic service based on Vancouver Island. We perform battery health assessments, pre-purchase inspections, diagnostic trouble code analysis, and charging system evaluations — coming to your location and delivering written reports the same day.
Our services are used by current EV owners who want to understand their battery's condition, buyers considering a used EV purchase, and anyone who has received a warning light or fault code and wants an objective second opinion before visiting a dealership or repair shop.
We also work with dealerships who want to provide prospective buyers with independent third-party documentation on a vehicle's battery health — helping customers feel confident about their purchase.
We support a wide range of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) including popular models from Ford, Chevrolet, Tesla, Hyundai, Kia, Volkswagen, Rivian, and others.
See the full list on our Supported Vehicles page. If your model isn't listed, contact us — additional makes and models may be supported.
No. We come to you. Diagnostics are performed on-site at your home, workplace, or wherever your vehicle is located on Vancouver Island. There's no need to tow or drive your vehicle to a shop.
State of Health (SOH) is a percentage that represents how much of your battery's original capacity remains. A new battery starts at 100% SOH. Over time and charge cycles, capacity naturally degrades — a battery at 85% SOH can hold 85% of what it could when new.
SOH matters because it directly affects your real-world range, charging behaviour, and long-term ownership costs. Knowing your battery's SOH helps you make informed decisions about buying, selling, or continuing to own an EV.
We use professional-grade diagnostic tools that communicate directly with your vehicle's Battery Management System (BMS). This gives us access to live and historical data including SOH percentage, cell-level voltages, capacity measurements, and thermal data.
This is not an estimate or a visual inspection — it's measured data pulled directly from the vehicle's own systems.
A standard battery health assessment typically takes 60–90 minutes on-site. This includes connecting to the vehicle, running the diagnostic sequence, reviewing the data, and preparing your written report. We'll confirm the expected duration when you book.
We can provide the data you need to understand your battery's condition and compare it against manufacturer warranty thresholds. Most EV manufacturers warrant the battery to a minimum SOH (commonly 70% over 8 years or 160,000 km). Our report gives you the documentation to support a warranty claim if your battery falls below that threshold — but warranty decisions are made by the manufacturer or dealer, not by us.
Used EVs can look and drive perfectly well while carrying hidden battery degradation, stored fault codes, or charging system issues that won't show up in a test drive. A pre-purchase inspection gives you objective data on the vehicle's actual condition before you commit.
It also gives you negotiating leverage — if the battery is at 78% SOH when the seller implied it was in great shape, that's information worth having before you sign.
The vehicle needs to be accessible and ideally have a reasonable charge level (above 20%). The seller doesn't need to be present, but they do need to provide access to the vehicle. We recommend coordinating with the seller in advance and letting them know a third-party inspection is being arranged.
Don't ignore it, but don't panic either. Warning lights can indicate anything from a minor sensor issue to something that needs prompt attention. A DTC analysis will tell you exactly what code triggered the light, what it means, and what your realistic options are.
We provide the diagnostic information — we don't perform repairs. But we can help you understand whether the issue is urgent, what questions to ask your service provider, and whether the recommended repair is consistent with what the data shows.
Yes. Clearing codes without addressing the root cause is common. We can pull the full fault history, identify recurring codes, and help you understand what's actually triggering the issue — giving you better information to bring back to your service provider.
We serve communities across Vancouver Island including Courtenay, Comox, Cumberland, Campbell River, Parksville, Qualicum Beach, Nanaimo, and surrounding areas. If you're unsure whether we cover your location, reach out and we'll confirm.
Use the contact form on our Contact page or call us directly. Tell us your vehicle make and model, your location, and what you're trying to understand. We'll confirm availability and get you scheduled.
You receive a written report the same day, delivered digitally. The report includes all measured data, plain-language explanations of the findings, and recommended next steps where applicable. It's designed to be shared — with a dealer, a seller, or a service provider.
